#ObjectOfTheWeek is a 1943 rayon blend scarf designed by Arnold Lever for Jacqmar. Lever designed a series of patriotic Wartime Scarves that featured a serious subject matter presented in an almost ‘cheeky’ manner. This particular scarf boasts slogans that aid in reminding all who read the scarf to do their part in rationing. The black script includes the slogan “Is that journey necessary?”, “ Switch off the light, darling.”, and “Keep it under your hat”.
During the war, scarves were expensive, costing two out of 66 (and later only 24) ration coupons. A scarf was a significant investment during this time; the buyer must have loved the message of this piece.
Interestingly, the use of graphic prints is considered a modern design element to share the beliefs and preferences of the wearer. This article of clothing demonstrates a sophisticated way to wear patriotism long before graphic tees were popular.
