Documentation

Documentation is an integral part of any treatment. An initial report details the steps, materials, and time to treat the textile. An examination report and post-treatment report document the treatments used, accompanied by a before-and-after photographic record for visual comparison of the treatment.

This service can be used separately from treatment services to document for insurance claims or to determine a baseline for storage or transportation.

Cleaning

A soiled textile, whether it's from dust or wear, can accelerate the deterioration. To extend the life of your textile, proper cleaning is essential. Cleaning will serve to improve the longevity and the overall appearance, ensuring it will last for years to come. 

Treatments vary based on the condition of the textile and the client's goals, but can include: dry surface cleaning, vacuuming, localized spot cleaning, and wet cleaning.  

Stabilization and Repair

Stabilization and repair with specialized techniques and materials improve the structural integrity of the textile. Fabric is a delicate material that can deteriorate over time. With the use of conservation stitches and supportive fabric layers, the textile's strength and appearance can be improved. 

This treatment can include the addition of net or fabric overlays, underlays, backings, and linings, which support the textile and extend its lifespan.

Mounting

A mount is a conservation-safe rigid support encased in fabric. The flat textile is sewn to the mount with specialized stitches. This treatment reduces the movement of the textile, decreasing the possible damage over time. The mount can then be framed if desired. 3D textiles can also be mounted with custom-designed forms, including padded mounts and carved Ethafoam shapes that provide support while in storage or on display.

Packing and Storage

An acid-free storage box or roller with conservation-safe tissue paper is the best long-term solution for storage. With proper tissue placement, the object can be supported and stabilized. Properly supporting the textile with safe materials helps to preserve the object's integrity.
